Chapter One: "We Who Are Dark"

Chapter One: "We Who Are Dark"

Bettina L. Love takes no time easing you into the urgency of our need to address the systemic inequality that impacts our society. Bringing in a quote from W.E.B Du Bois she helps us focus on our wants, yet brings light to how our ideas can be tainted by the messages a broken system instills into black and brown people through the education system. Along the lines of the concept of Collective Mattering, I find it very important that this text be read in a Book Club format because this work can not be done alone. Please read pages 1 to 15 and unpack the text with me reflecting on the following questions:

  1. What value does Abolitionists teaching bring to the Education Profession?

  2. How did this quote impact how you decide to show up as an advocate for Educational Equity “ How do you matter to a country that measures your knowledge against a “gap” it created?”

  3. How does Gender Vs. Blackness impact Educational Outcomes? What can we do about it?

  4. How do you demand the impossible?

  5. How do you find ways to matter?

  6. What is your perception of the concept of “Reform Ain’t Justice”?

  7. Chapter One was filled with deep thoughts for me! Feel free to share any thoughts that come to mind that were not addressed above.
